13 STR loci are required for convicted offenders, arrestee, detainee and legal profiles (FBI, 2010). The 13 loci are distributed in a uniform fashion across the genome, and the positions on the chromosomes can be seen below (Kluftinger and Plunkett, 2015).
It is important to use 13 STR loci because the more loci tested the more ability there is to distinguish between two people (Kluftinger and Plunkett, 2015). As well, between ethnic groups the allele frequencies differ, and therefore, the more loci studied, the ability to distinguish between 2 individuals increases and the probability that the match was made by error decreases (Kluftinger and Plunkett, 2015).
In the early 1980’s, it was found that some locations in the human genome were polymorphic and contain many alleles detected as RFLPs and later on as STRs (Connect My DNA, 2015). Later on it was determined that 13 loci that were independent were able to provide sufficient information on biological relationships which were used to identify individuals, except identical twins (Connect My DNA, 2015).
