A polysaccharide obtained from agar and used as a supporting medium in gel electrophoresis (Merriam-Webster, 1953). Agarose is a 3 dimensional matrix formed of helical agarose molecules in supercoiled bundles that are aggregated into 3-D structures with channels and pores which molecules are able to pass through (Sambrook, Russel, 2001).
